DRM implementation has latetley aroused a lot of interest around the pc world, even among the non-tech savy. Microsoft launched the much touted Vista OS with DRM included. I have installed a RTM version to trial before maybe buying an upgrade. I said maybe, because I see very much Linux in my computing future as well as open office, thundirbird, etc. I have various strong opinions on piracy and DRM which I want to share with the world and galdly wait for insight from fellow bloggers:
Theory #1.- Piracy is not driven by the average user:
Third world countries cannot pay the aoutrageous prices. Of course, companies have to look at this situation in the context of local ecconomy. The "well sell them a souped down version" is very greedy approach. Will microsoft go bankrupt if central america buy windows for half the price as a European would for the same version? Usually this situation reflect the truth that first world consumers should know: You pay a lot more for the same cr*p.
There is the matter of age: a 15 year old kid wants to buy a lot of games but does not have a job. when hes 24 he is able to buy most of the stuff he could not in his teen years. No use to punish this client for the piracy used by the kids.
I played cracked versions of the original half life and loved it. Now I can pay for high bandwith internet, a kick ass Vaio notebook and a legit collectors edition of half life 2 plus all expansions sold through Steam. Of course the DRM hassle is one of the reason I dicided to buy instead of crack, to enjoy the game to its fullest. But If I could not afford it, then the cracked version would be the way to go.
My conclussion: Pirate users are not directly proportional to lost sales.
nPuser=nSale This the MPAA and RIAA formula for DRM.
Theory #2- Pirated software in fact is a merchandising stunt:
How did Paris Hilton get so famous: Free videos:
How si AVG antivirus mentioned in so many places: Its good and free.
there must be a million examples:
Of course, for those all of you that no longer live at the expense of you mum and dad's wallet, THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A FREE MEAL
But if you tried it for free and the price is right, AND you have the dough to buy it, you most definitly will. rule does not apply for cheap bastards and people with delinquent habits.
The first I will die of hunger and the second on the hands of cops or a co-delinquer.
Will follow up later, my brain is dry right now, I'm not used to this kind of mental exercise.
Sorry for ortographic mistakes, I'm too tired to check.
